In 1949, Michaels left Charleston to attend Radcliffe College, where she studied English. She graduated summa cum laude in 1953, and then went on to earn her master's degree from Harvard University in 1955.
Teaching and Writing Career
After graduating from Harvard, Michaels began teaching English at Wellesley College. She taught there for two years, before moving to New York City in 1957. In New York, she worked as an editor for several magazines, including Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.
In 1961, Michaels published her first novel, The Locusts. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it established Michaels as a major voice in American literature. Michaels went on to publish six more novels, as well as several collections of short stories and essays.
Personal Life
Michaels was married twice. Her first marriage, to the writer Robert Duncan, ended in divorce. Her second marriage, to the painter Lionel Abel, lasted until Abel's death in 1986.
Michaels was a private person, and she rarely spoke about her personal life in public. However, she did share some of her experiences in her writing. In her novel The Feast of Love, for example, she explored the themes of love, loss, and betrayal.
Death and Legacy
Michaels died in 2013 at the age of 81. She was survived by her two children.
Michaels' work has been praised for its intelligence, wit, and emotional depth. She was a master of language, and her writing is often compared to that of Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf. Michaels' work has also been recognized for its feminist themes. She was a strong supporter of women's rights, and she often wrote about the challenges faced by women in society.
Michaels' work continues to be read and enjoyed by readers around the world. She is considered one of the most important American writers of the 20th century, and her work is a valuable contribution to the literary landscape.
