Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987) was a Nigerian nationalist, statesman, and political leader who played a key role in the country's independence movement and post-independence politics. He is considered one of the most important figures in Nigerian history.

Early Life and Education

In 1923, Awolowo enrolled at the Abeokuta Grammar School. He was a brilliant student and excelled in his studies. He was also a gifted athlete and played football and cricket.

In 1927, Awolowo graduated from the Abeokuta Grammar School with honors. He then worked as a clerk for the Nigerian Railway Corporation. In 1934, he was awarded a scholarship to study law at the University of London.

Awolowo excelled at the University of London and was awarded a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1946. He was also called to the bar at the Inner Temple in London.

Political Career

Awolowo returned to Nigeria in 1946 and entered politics. He was a founding member of the Action Group, a political party that advocated for the independence of Nigeria.
