The recorder is a woodwind instrument that is often played by beginners. It is a relatively easy instrument to learn, and it can help you develop your musical skills. In this article, we'll teach you how to play the recorder, from holding the instrument to fingering the notes. We'll also provide you with a free video lesson that you can use to practice your skills.

Getting Started

The first step to learning how to play the recorder is to get a good instrument. You can find recorders at most music stores. When choosing a recorder, it is important to make sure that it is the right size for you. The recorder should be long enough to reach from your mouth to your chin, and it should have a comfortable grip.

Once you have a recorder, you can start learning how to hold it. The recorder is held with the left hand at the top and the right hand at the bottom. The left thumb should rest on the back of the recorder, and the fingers should be placed over the holes. The right hand should be placed below the recorder, with the thumb on the back and the fingers over the keys.

Fingering the Notes

The recorder has seven holes: six on the front and one on the back. The notes are fingered by covering the holes with your fingers. The following chart shows you how to finger the notes on the recorder:

| Note | Fingering | |---|---| | C | All holes covered | | D | Cover the first hole with your left index finger | | E | Cover the first and second holes with your left index and middle fingers | | F | Cover the first, second, and third holes with your left index, middle, and ring fingers | | G | Cover the first, second, third, and fourth holes with your left index, middle, ring, and little fingers | | A | Cover the first, second, third, and fourth holes with your left index, middle, ring, and little fingers, and uncover the sixth hole with your right thumb | | B | Cover the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth holes with your left index, middle, ring, little, and right index fingers |

Playing the Recorder

Once you know how to finger the notes, you can start playing the recorder. To play a note, simply blow into the mouthpiece and cover the appropriate holes with your fingers. The harder you blow, the louder the note will sound. The softer you blow, the softer the note will sound.

You can also change the pitch of a note by moving your fingers up or down the holes. Moving your fingers up the holes will make the note higher, and moving your fingers down the holes will make the note lower.

Practice

The best way to learn how to play the recorder is to practice regularly. Try to practice for at least 15 minutes each day. As you practice, you will start to improve your skills and learn how to play more complex songs.
