The Life and Times of May Marston

Born on May 13, 1892, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May Merrill Marston was the daughter of a prominent businessman named Edwin Marston. Her father had made his fortune in real estate and banking, and the family lived in a lavish mansion on the shores of Lake Minnetonka. May enjoyed a privileged upbringing, receiving a fine education and indulging in the pastimes of the upper class.

In her early twenties, May met and married Arthur Lyon, a doctor, but the marriage ended in divorce after a few years. In 1921, she remarried Walter Marston, a distant cousin and a successful citrus grower in Riverside. The couple settled into a luxurious estate known as "Elsinor" in the heart of the orange groves.

The Day of Disappearance

On the fateful day of September 17, 1927, May Marston left her home alone, informing her servants that she was going for a walk. She was dressed in a light blue dress and carried a parasol. Witnesses later reported seeing her walking along a path that led into the sprawling orange groves behind her property.

As hours turned into days, May Marston's absence became a cause for concern. Her servants searched the grounds, but there was no sign of her. The local authorities were notified, and a massive search operation was launched, involving hundreds of volunteers.

The Search and the Theories

The search for May Marston extended far beyond Riverside. Detectives scoured the surrounding counties and even traveled to Mexico in pursuit of any leads. The disappearance sparked intense speculation and numerous theories emerged.

Some believed that she had been kidnapped for ransom, while others suspected that she had run away with a lover. There were even rumors of an affair with a Mexican bandit, adding an element of romance to the mystery.

However, as the investigation progressed, the evidence pointed towards a more sinister . Bloodstains were discovered on the path where May Marston had last been seen, suggesting that she had been attacked. As the days turned into weeks, the hope of finding her alive dwindled.

The Trial and the Aftermath

In May 1929, two men, John Harrington Smith and Elmer J. Dyer, were arrested in connection with May Marston's disappearance. Smith, a drifter with a criminal record, confessed to killing her during a botched robbery attempt. However, his confession was later recanted, and the charges against both men were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence.

The Orange Grove Mystery remained unsolved, leaving behind a haunting legacy of unanswered questions and broken dreams. May Marston's fate became a subject of legend and speculation, with theories continuing to circulate to this day.

The Legacy of the Orange Grove Mystery

The Orange Grove Mystery had a profound impact on the community of Riverside and beyond. It shook the confidence of the upper classes, who had previously felt safe in their secluded homes. It also highlighted the dangers faced by women in society, especially those who traveled alone.

The mystery has been the subject of numerous books, articles, and documentaries, each offering a different perspective on the events that unfolded. It remains one of the most enduring and enigmatic unresolved crimes in American history.

: The Enduring Enigmas of the Orange Grove Mystery

The Orange Grove Mystery is a captivating tale of a wealthy heiress who vanished without a trace, leaving behind a legacy of unanswered questions. The disappearance of May Marston has haunted generations of investigators, writers, and historians alike.
