In 2017, the #MeToo movement swept the world, empowering women to share their stories of sexual harassment and assault. In Africa, the movement was inspired by the courageous testimony of a young woman named Uyinene Mrwetyana.

Uyinene was a 19-year-old student at the University of Cape Town. On August 24, 2019, she went to a post office to collect a parcel. She was never seen alive again.

Uyinene's disappearance and subsequent murder sparked outrage across South Africa. Protests erupted in cities around the country, and the hashtag #AmINext began trending on social media.

Uyinene's story resonated with women across Africa. She was a bright, ambitious young woman who had her whole life ahead of her. Her murder was a reminder of the dangers that women face every day.

In the wake of Uyinene's death, many women came forward to share their own stories of sexual harassment and assault. The #MeToo movement in Africa was born.

The #MeToo movement has had a profound impact on Africa. It has raised awareness of the prevalence of sexual violence, and it has given women a platform to speak out about their experiences.

The movement has also led to concrete changes. In South Africa, for example, the government has passed new laws to protect women from sexual violence.

Uyinene Mrwetyana's legacy will live on. She was a courageous young woman who inspired a movement that is changing the world.

Eyewitness Memoirs

The following are eyewitness memoirs from people who knew Uyinene Mrwetyana:

From her friend, Zikhona Banzi:

"Uyinene was a beautiful soul. She was always smiling and she had a kind word for everyone. She was also a very strong and independent woman. She never let anything stand in her way."

From her teacher, Nomsa Mthembu:

"Uyinene was a brilliant student. She was always eager to learn and she always achieved her goals. She was a role model for her classmates and she inspired everyone who knew her."

From her mother, Nontuthuzelo Mrwetyana:

"Uyinene was my precious daughter. She was everything to me. She was my best friend and my confidante. I miss her so much every day."

Uyinene Mrwetyana's story is a tragedy, but it is also a story of hope. Her courage and resilience inspired a movement that is changing the world. We must never forget her.
