Excerpt from Ukali Black Life Rises

"I was born in the back of a taxi cab on a cold winter night in Detroit, Michigan. My mother was a young, single woman who had just arrived in the city from the rural South. She was alone and afraid, but she was determined to make a better life for herself and her unborn child.

"My mother worked hard to raise me. She worked two jobs and often had to rely on welfare to make ends meet. But she never gave up on me. She always encouraged me to dream big and to never let anyone tell me that I couldn't achieve my goals.

"I went on to graduate from high school and college. I became a teacher and later a principal. I am now the proud mother of two beautiful children. I have achieved my dreams, and I owe it all to my mother.

"My story is just one of many stories in Ukali Black Life Rises. These stories are a testament to the strength and resilience of the Black community. They are a celebration of Black excellence, and they are an inspiration for all."
