In 535 AD, Belisarius was sent to Italy to fight against the Ostrogoths. The Ostrogoths had conquered Italy in the 5th century AD, and they were a major threat to the Byzantine Empire. Belisarius fought a brilliant campaign against the Ostrogoths, and he eventually reconquered Italy for the Byzantine Empire. However, the Gothic War was a long and bloody conflict, and Belisarius was eventually recalled to Constantinople.
The Persian War
In 541 AD, Belisarius was given command of an expedition to the East to fight against the Persians. The Persians had been a major enemy of the Byzantine Empire for centuries, and Justinian was determined to defeat them. Belisarius led a force of 30,000 men against the Persians, and he fought a brilliant campaign. Later Life and Legacy
